The Challenge
To provide Lauder with a much-needed, purpose-built health centre, replacing outdated facilities and meeting the needs of a rural community. The new building had to be functional, welcoming, and easy to navigate while achieving high sustainability standards and integrating sensitively into its recreation ground setting.
Our Approach
Located at the northern edge of the town recreation ground, the two-storey central cubic form is anchored by a double-height cylindrical waiting space—the heart of the design. A single-storey element wraps three sides, creating a human scale and clear zoning between public, patient, and staff areas. Sustainability measures include natural ventilation, high insulation, energy-efficient lighting, and underfloor heating powered by air source heat pumps.
The Conclusion
Lauder Health Centre delivers a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible facility, significantly improving healthcare provision for the local community. Its clear layout, natural light, and welcoming spaces create a positive experience for patients and staff, ensuring the building is a valued long-term asset for the town.
