Arbroath Infirmary

Client

Macmillan Cancer Support / NHS Tayside

Location

Arbroath, Angus

Sector

Health

The Arbroath Macmillan Cancer Support Unit transforms vacant spaces within Arbroath Infirmary into a calm, community-focused treatment centre. Designed with input from patients, families, and clinicians, the centre provides therapy areas, communal spaces, and an art programme, offering accessible local cancer care in a relaxed, non-institutional environment.

The Challenge

Patients from Angus required to travel to Dundee for Cancer Treatment, support and care. This travel added stress and time to the patient’s treatment and placed additional pressure on the unit at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. A site in the existing Arbroath Infirmary was identified to provide a local treatment option. Macmillan Cancer Support partnered with NHS Tayside to support the development of this new unit.

Our Approach

Working closely with clinical staff, patients and family members we developed a relaxed treatment and therapy environment, with communal spaces and an information lounge.  The existing vacant spaces were refurbished and refocused on the courtyard garden and views out across the bay. The project was unified by a bespoke art programme – A faroff land – developed with the Scottish Artist Alec Finlay.  In addition to the physical pieces the art programme produced books of local poetry for each user of the space, acting as a conversation starter and discussion piece to foster community and friendship

The Conclusion

Those needing cancer treatment in Angus can now receive local treatment in a relaxed non-institutional environment in the heart of their own community.
