The Challenge
Macmillan Cancer Support and the Western Health Trust sought to create a new Health & Wellbeing Campus at Altnagelvin Hospital. The ambition was to deliver purpose-built, non-institutional facilities while sensitively refurbishing Agnes Jones House, a historic building of character, and connecting both through a cohesive and welcoming design.
Our Approach
The new single-storey Macmillan Information and Support Centre adopts a triangular plan form with all key spaces arranged around a central hub—the heart of the scheme. Light-filled therapy, group and family rooms provide calm, uplifting spaces, while natural ventilation, underfloor heating and carefully modelled rooflights enhance comfort and wellbeing. Agnes Jones House is sympathetically refurbished, modernised internally and provides additional group and staff accommodation. The two buildings are connected by a landscaped courtyard, arranged around a central bespoke sculpture, part of a dedicated art programme developed with the renowned artist Locky Morris.
The Solution
The campus creates a warm, contemporary non-clinical environment. By uniting new and old through a sensitive, human-centred approach, the development enhances caner support and information services while safeguarding the character of Agnes Jones House for future generations.
