The Challenge
Jedburgh Town Hall, a listed landmark overlooking Jedburgh Abbey, faced an uncertain future. The community sought to safeguard its role as a civic and cultural asset while addressing accessibility, functionality, and long-term sustainability. The challenge was to balance heritage sensitivity with bold ideas for contemporary community use.
Our Approach
Aitken Turnbull worked closely with the Jedburgh Legacy Group and Jura Consulting, combining design expertise with strategic business planning. Extensive engagement informed options from minimal access interventions to full-scale remodelling and extension. Design proposals focused on the simpler north and west elevations, integrating contemporary elements while respecting the historic fabric.
The Conclusion
The feasibility study provided a clear, costed framework for the community to assume control of the building and reimagine it as a flexible local venue. Inspired by Jedburgh’s medieval character and the Capon Tree, the proposals laid the foundations for a revitalised Town Hall with renewed social and cultural purpose.
