We are pleased that Aitken Turnbull has successfully achieved planning approval for the conversion of a derelict, A-listed former bakery and its associated courtyard into creative units for rent to local artists and creatives.
The project is the vision of the Jedburgh Community Trust—a new Creative Quarter in the centre of Jedburgh—bringing back to life a disused courtyard and buildings that lie on the site of the former Corn Exchange, which burned down in the early 1900s, with some of its walls which still remain.
A new pedestrian route will be formed through the courtyard, linking Exchange Street to Grahamslaw Close, passing through the bakery courtyard and creating a vibrant new public space. The project builds on the success of the Porthouse project, which adjoins the bakery and was recently completed by the Trust.
The approval also includes the construction of two new townhouses on the site of the disused garages to the rear on Grahamslaw Close, which will help fund the development.
As well as providing new accommodation for creatives in the area, the Trust envisages that the project will act as a catalyst for further development and help to energise the regeneration of other buildings in the centre of Jedburgh.
