The Challenge
The ambition was to bring a long-derelict, A-listed building back into use within Jedburgh’s conservation area. The challenge lay in safeguarding the bakery’s historic character while introducing contemporary, flexible spaces that could support creative industries and contribute to the wider regeneration of the town centre.
Our Approach
The design carefully balances preservation and renewal. The three-storey bakery is being sensitively refurbished to accommodate artist studios and creative workspaces, allowing historic features to sit alongside modern interventions. A new pend provides a vital link between the courtyard and Grahamslaw Close, improving permeability and encouraging footfall.
The courtyard itself is being revitalised as a welcoming public space—designed to foster interaction between artists, residents, and visitors. Together, these interventions create a layered environment that respects the town’s heritage while supporting its cultural and economic future.
The Conclusion
The Jethart Creative Quarter demonstrates how adaptive reuse can breathe new life into historic fabric. By turning a derelict bakery into a creative hub, the project strengthens Jedburgh’s identity, enriches its cultural offering, and reactivates a key town centre site for the benefit of the whole community.
