The Halifax Building on Trinity Road is a landmark of post-war British architecture and the former head office of the Halifax Building Society. Built between 1968 and 1974 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II, its special architectural and historic interest is recognised in its Grade II listing. With a legacy of design excellence—reinforced by both a RIBA Award for Architecture and a European Architectural Heritage Year Award—the project required a sensitive balance between conservation and the creation of a modern, flexible workplace for Lloyds Banking Group colleagues.

The Challenge

The key challenge was to carefully upgrade a nationally significant listed building while introducing contemporary workplace standards, improved environmental performance, and wellbeing-focused spaces. Essential heritage elements—including curtain walling, ceiling structures, and timber panelling—needed to be respected and, where appropriate, reinstated. The work also had to integrate modern standards for sustainability, hybrid working, and colleague facilities, all within the constraints of a complex historic structure.

The Solution

Our design approach focused on retaining the building’s architectural identity while introducing unobtrusive, high-quality contemporary interventions. This involved developing a new curtain walling system that replicated the original appearance, reinstating part of the historic ceiling grid on the 4th floor, and reintroducing original timber panelling within a dedicated heritage zone. In parallel, we embedded LBG design principles: increased natural light, biophilic elements, flexible work settings, and enhanced wellbeing amenities.

The Conclusion

The completed scheme preserves the Halifax Building’s distinctive character while delivering a bright, adaptable, and wellbeing-focused workplace. A large new rooflight brings daylight into the heart of the floorplates, a feature staircase improves connectivity and social interaction, and biodiverse roofs and planting support both sustainability and colleague wellbeing. Flexible workspaces, an event area, a wellbeing suite, and a working café create a vibrant, modern environment that respects the building’s heritage and supports the needs of today’s workforce.
