CONVERSION OF PETER SCOTT MILL

A listed mill founded in 1878 that became famous for its knitwear throughout the world

This listed mill was founded in 1878 and became famous for its knitwear throughout the world. The Mill Occupied a dense site developed over a century the front of which forms a prominent elevation on A7 approach to Hawick Town Centre.

Initially working with the council and historic bodies Aitken Turnbull carried out a feasibility study to establish the practicalities and main issues involved in developing the site for a residential use.

This identified the demolition internal buildings within the site while retaining the perimeter buildings and key features such as the chimney to maintain the history and sense of place as the way forward.

The first phase of the development was to convert the Yarn Store into 10 apartments aimed at over 55s or retiring couples for which a clear need had be identified.

The existing fenestration pattern was maintained with the elevations remodelled to provide amenity balcony space with glazed balustrades which maintained the building’s rhythm and structure.

A new internal service core was formed, and general upgrade and refurbishment of the existing building fabric carried out
