Alasdair Rankin
Managing Director
Alasdair leads Aitken Turnbull as Managing Director, guiding the strategic vision and steering the senior management team with clear purpose. With extensive experience as a project and framework director across diverse sectors, he brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the practice. His passion lies in Healthcare and Major Projects, where he excels in shaping strategic briefs and fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement. Alasdair’s thoughtful leadership ensures that every project aligns with both client goals and community needs, driving the continued growth and success of Aitken Turnbull.
Alexandra McAuly-Brand
Architectural Technologist
As an Architectural Technologist, Alexandra joined Aitken Turnbull in 2025, bringing over four years of experience in architectural design and technical delivery, primarily within the residential sector. With a strong eye for detail, she has collaborated closely with engineers and consultants to produce practical, well-coordinated designs. Alexandra is currently working towards Chartered Architectural Technologist status and is eager to expand her expertise across a variety of sectors at Aitken Turnbull. Her commitment to precision and professional growth makes her a valuable addition to the team.
Alistair Whitson
Associate
Alistair is a highly experienced technical leader at Aitken Turnbull, bringing over 35 years of knowledge and expertise to the team. Educated at Edinburgh College of Art he has developed a wealth of experience as a technical leader, and has extensive experience across a range of sectors including Healthcare and Residential projects. Alongside his technical leadership, he also oversees IT within the practice, ensuring systems run smoothly and efficiently. With a practical, hands-on approach and a wealth of insight, Alistair supports the team in delivering well-crafted, reliable solutions for every project.
Ben Glennon
Associate
Ben plays a key role at Aitken Turnbull as Associate and leader of the Living Team, bringing strong design leadership, project management, and technical expertise throughout every stage of a project. With over 10 years at the practice, he has created award-winning designs that balance innovation, sustainability, and a genuine focus on community needs. Ben’s proactive, collaborative approach helps ensure projects not only meet client goals but also positively impact the places and people they serve. Passionate about community-led initiatives, he works closely with local groups to develop thoughtful, meaningful design solutions that truly make a difference.
Callum Ford
Associate & Technical Lead
As an experienced Architectural Technician, Callum combines strong technical knowledge with a practical, hands-on approach at Aitken Turnbull. Starting as a trainee while studying Architectural Technology at Edinburgh Napier University, he has built up experience across housing, bespoke homes, non-domestic buildings, and fit-out projects. Involved from early design through to completion, Callum specialises in BIM and clear, accurate project delivery. His skills in 3D visualisation also help bring designs to life and support effective communication with clients and teams. Approachable and down-to-earth, he ensures projects run smoothly and efficiently from start to finish.
Cara Knight
PA & Operations Assistant
As PA to the Managing Director and Operations Assistant, Cara helps keep Aitken Turnbull’s day-to-day operations running seamlessly. Based in our Edinburgh studio, she provides key support on everything from diary management and invoicing to coordinating daily business operations. Cara also works closely with both our Operations Lead and our Marketing Manager, helping to deliver internal events and team activities throughout the year. As a go-to person for our CMap project management system, she supports colleagues in using the platform effectively, making sure it contributes to well-organised, efficient project delivery. With a proactive, friendly approach, Cara helps bring energy and clarity to the smooth running of the practice.
David Smart
Associate Director
As Associate Director, David oversees the Edinburgh studio and plays an active role in shaping the wider direction of Aitken Turnbull. With a collaborative approach, he supports the growth and development of the team, mentoring emerging talent through their professional studies and fostering a supportive studio culture. David leads major projects at AT, bringing over 15 years of experience across sectors with particular strengths in workplace design, residential development, performance venues, and later-living projects. His broad design and delivery expertise includes award-winning work, ensuring high-quality outcomes for clients while guiding the next generation of architects.
Ethné Illingworth
Senior Technician
Ethnè is a Senior Architectural Technician at Aitken Turnbull, bringing a wealth of experience and technical knowledge to every project. Based in Dumfries, she supports the delivery of complex projects, particularly within healthcare. A skilled AutoCAD user, Ethnè is also expanding her expertise with Revit and BIM platforms to support efficient, team-based working. With a solutions-focused approach, Ethnè helps ensure that our technical delivery is robust, coordinated, and aligned with the needs of our clients.
Fraser Hunter
Associate & Studio Lead - Galashiels
Fraser combines over 15 years of experience with a calm, organised approach as Galashiels Studio Resource Manager at Aitken Turnbull. With a background across bespoke housing, private developments, and commercial projects, he brings practical know-how and a clear focus on delivering work efficiently and to a high standard. Central to coordinating project workflows and managing team resources, Fraser helps keep day-to-day operations running smoothly. He also supports the wider success of the practice, ensuring projects are delivered on time and to brief. With his approachable, steady style, Fraser plays a key part in creating a well-structured and supportive working environment.
Gavin Fallen
Associate & Studio Lead - Edinburgh
Gavin brings over 20 years of experience across residential, commercial, and large-scale developments, including international project delivery in the UAE. At Aitken Turnbull, he works within both the Workspace and Living teams, contributing his broad sector knowledge and collaborative approach to a diverse range of projects. Based in our Edinburgh studio, Gavin oversees resourcing and plays an active role in the wider leadership team. He leads design reviews within our Edinburgh studio, supports the implementation of documentation management processes, and promotes wellbeing across the practice as a Mental Health Champion, helping to ensure smooth project delivery while fostering a supportive and collaborative studio culture.
Inese Krauze
Architectural Assistant
Inese is a key part of our Edinburgh studio, bringing a conscientious and methodical approach to her role as an Architectural Assistant. Since joining Aitken Turnbull in 2019, she has built up experience across a diverse range of projects, including residential developments, listed building conversions, healthcare and workspace design. She is valued for her calm, thoughtful way of working and her ability to support project teams at all stages of the design process. Inese takes pride in delivering well-resolved, accurate information, with a focus on quality and clarity that ensures positive outcomes for both the practice and our clients.
James Armstrong
Architectural Assistant
James joined Aitken Turnbull’s Galashiels office in September 2024 after graduating from Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) with an M.Arch (Hons). With a keen interest in heritage and conservation, he has contributed to a variety of residential, civic, and heritage projects since starting at AT. James brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented approach to his work, balancing creativity with respect for historic contexts. Outside of the practice, he writes for the AHSS Magazine and enjoys sketching, combining his passion for architecture with his artistic talents. James is quickly becoming a valuable member of the team, supporting Aitken Turnbull’s commitment to quality and care in every project.
James Broderick
Senior Technician
James studied Architectural Technology at Cork Institute of Technology and Napier University, Edinburgh, earning his BSc. With 25 years of industry experience, he brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the team. James has worked across a wide range of sectors, including residential, education, hospitality, commercial, industrial, and leisure projects. Since joining Aitken Turnbull, he has played a key role in delivering major government commercial fit-out projects across the UK. With his extensive experience and practical expertise, James is a reliable and valued member of the team, contributing to successful project outcomes with professionalism and dedication.
James Grant
Associate Director
James brings extensive experience across architecture, interior design, and commercial fitout, combining creative vision with strong commercial understanding. Before joining Aitken Turnbull, he was a Director at Steelcase in Australia, delivering workspace strategies for clients such as Deloitte, NAB, KPMG, and ANZ, and working closely with universities including Melbourne, RMIT, and UNSW. Earlier, he led workplace and education projects in practices across Melbourne, London, and Newcastle. As Workspace Sector Lead at Aitken Turnbull, James provides strategic direction and builds strong, long-term client relationships. He plays a key role in managing partnerships with major clients including Lloyds Banking Group and Wates, while promoting a collaborative, thoughtful, and innovative approach across the studio.
Kai Lennie
Trainee Technician
Kai is a trainee Architectural Technician at Aitken Turnbull, currently in his third year studying part-time for a BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology at Edinburgh Napier University. His ongoing studies complement his work, helping him grow his technical skills and practical experience while contributing to live projects. Since joining the practice in 2022, Kai has shown a keen enthusiasm and a commitment to learning, steadily developing his role and making valuable contributions to the team. With a positive, eager attitude, Kai is building a strong foundation for his future in architecture, supported by hands-on experience and continuous professional growth.
Kat Bass
Office Coordinator
As Office Coordinator, Kat plays a key role in the smooth running of our studios, managing day-to-day administration, finances, and providing support to the technical team. Since joining Aitken Turnbull in 2007, she has brought a wealth of knowledge and versatility to the role. With a Diploma of Higher Education in Psychology and a diverse professional background spanning business studies, bookkeeping, debt collection, and legal diligence, Kat’s skills are both wide-ranging and adaptable. She also draws on her extensive training in telephony, having started her career in London as an original GPO-trained bilingual telephonist.
Laura McCrossan
Associate Director
As Associate Director & Operations Lead, Laura keeps Aitken Turnbull running efficiently while guiding the Support Team and business operations. In 2023, Laura became the first non-architectural Associate—recognition of her significant impact on the wider business. She’s also studying Business Management at Heriot-Watt University through the Graduate Apprenticeship scheme, continuing to grow her knowledge and skills. As part of the leadership team, Laura helps shape strategy and drive the practice forward, combining a practical mindset with a caring, supportive approach that keeps both people and projects moving in the right direction.
Leigh-Anne Jackson
Comms & Marketing Manager
Leigh-Anne combines her role as Communications and Marketing Manager with a creative, focused approach that helps Aitken Turnbull communicate its vision effectively. For over three years, she’s been instrumental in shaping our brand identity and delivering fresh, engaging marketing strategies that support the practice’s growth. Leigh-Anne is also an active part of our wider leadership team, where she helps guide business strategy and contributes to the ongoing success of the practice. With a friendly, down-to-earth approach and a passion for clear communication, Leigh-Anne helps ensure that what we do—and why we do it—connects with both our team and the people we work with.
Lorna McKinnon
Finance Manager
Lorna has been a vital part of Aitken Turnbull since 2001, serving as Finance Manager and overseeing all financial operations with a strong understanding of the architecture industry. She works closely with senior leadership to align financial goals with the practice’s creative vision, supporting informed decision-making. Lorna manages a wide range of financial and administrative tasks, from reporting and analysis to invoicing, ensuring smooth operations and clear communication. With over two decades at the practice, she plays a key role in maintaining efficient financial processes and supporting the organisation’s broader needs with dedication and expertise.
Niamh Flett
Interior Designer
Niamh is part of the Aitken Turnbull team as an Interior Designer, bringing creativity, fresh thinking, and a keen eye for detail. Since graduating from Heriot-Watt University in 2023, she’s built experience across a range of sectors, with a particular focus on commercial workspace projects. Niamh plays an active role in delivering thoughtful, engaging interiors that put people at the heart of design. She enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues and clients to create dynamic, user-focused environments. With a positive, hands-on approach, Niamh is passionate about shaping spaces that work well for people while continuing to grow her skills across all stages of design and project delivery.
Peter Kelly
Technician
As a Technician at Aitken Turnbull, Peter brings hands-on expertise and a team-focused approach to every project. With over eight years of industry experience, he’s worked across a wide range of sectors—contributing to everything from small domestic projects to large mixed-use and residential developments. Peter also has valuable experience working with listed buildings and high-end conversions, developing a strong understanding of both contemporary design and sensitive restoration. Since graduating from Edinburgh Napier University in 2016, he’s built a reputation for being thorough, adaptable, and team-focused—helping ensure projects run smoothly from concept through to completion while supporting positive outcomes for both clients and communities.
Rachel Armistead
Senior Architect
Rachel brings her expertise as a Senior Architect to our Edinburgh studio, applying a thoughtful and considered approach to each project. Since joining Aitken Turnbull in 2014, she has built up broad experience across healthcare, education, and residential sectors, contributing to both design and delivery stages. Rachel combines strong technical skills with creative thinking, using tools like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite to help shape well-resolved, engaging spaces. Having completed her Part 3 studies at ESALA in 2017, she brings a professional, detail-focused mindset that supports high-quality outcomes for our clients and the wider project team.
Rebecca Laing
Technician
Rebecca contributes to Aitken Turnbull’s Galashiels studio with fresh energy and a hands-on, eager-to-learn approach. Having graduated from Edinburgh Napier University in 2020, she’s built four years of industry experience and quickly become involved in a range of projects—from smaller domestic builds to larger commercial conversions. Rebecca’s practical, hands-on approach and eagerness to learn make her a strong contributor to the team. Rebecca Lesher
Senior Architectural Designer
As a Senior Architectural Designer, Rebecca brings over five years of experience in education and public sector projects to Aitken Turnbull, which she joined in 2025. Having worked with practices in both London and Washington, DC, she has developed a strong foundation in delivering thoughtful, people-focused design. Rebecca holds an undergraduate degree from the University of St Andrews and earned her M.Arch from the University of Michigan in 2019. Her international experience and academic background combine to bring fresh perspective and insight to the practice’s growing portfolio.
Rebecca Randall
Part II Architectural Assistant
As a Part II Architectural Assistant, Rebecca rejoined Aitken Turnbull’s Edinburgh studio in 2025 after completing her Master’s at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment. She had previously spent her Part I placement with the practice in 2022, gaining valuable early experience. Rebecca has a strong interest in people-centred design, with a particular focus on creating spaces that respond to the needs and experiences of users. Her academic background and developing professional skills make her a committed and enthusiastic contributor to the practice’s growing portfolio.
Sarah Buchanan
Trainee Technician
As a Trainee Technician Sarah joined Aitken Turnbull in March 2022 and has been developing her skills alongside experienced team members. With an interest in modelling and design and a keen eye for detail, she is building confidence across a variety of tasks, from AutoCAD and 3D modelling in Revit to on-site surveys. Sarah is now producing technical and planning drawings and assisting with applications, while continuing to expand her knowledge.
Sean Noon
Part II Architectural Assistant
With a broad range of international experience, Sean works as a Part II Architectural Assistant at Aitken Turnbull. After completing his Master’s in Architecture at the University of Dundee in 2022, he went on to contribute to mixed-use and commercial projects in the UAE, Canada, and France. Since joining the practice in 2024, he has been working towards his Part III qualification to become a registered Architect. Sean is enthusiastic about applying his global perspective across a variety of sectors and is a dedicated member of the team.
Sebastian Mercer
Associate
Sebastian brings his expertise and collaborative approach to his role as Senior Architect at Aitken Turnbull, helping create meaningful, high-quality spaces. With a strong background in community, education, and cultural projects, he plays a lead role in our workspace sector efforts, focusing on fit-out and refurbishment. Sebastian expertly manages design teams and client relationships, guiding projects smoothly through both Design & Build and Traditional procurement routes. As a dedicated mentor and advocate for technical excellence, he supports the growth and development of our team. Sergio Melo
Architect
Sergio brings energy, creativity, and a collaborative, people-first approach to his role as an Architect at Aitken Turnbull. With a passion for how architecture shapes everyday experiences, he focuses on creating spaces that are both beautifully designed and closely connected to the way people live and work. Sergio enjoys exploring innovative spatial layouts, integrating smart technology, and drawing on biophilic principles to craft uplifting, engaging environments. His strength in 3D visualisation helps bring ideas to life, ensuring clear communication throughout the design process. Skye is a Part II Architectural Assistant at Aitken Turnbull, bringing fresh energy to the team. She completed her MArch at Robert Gordon University, balancing her studies with hands-on experience at the practice. With a strong passion for sustainable architecture, she is focused on applying and expanding her knowledge through her work at Aitken Turnbull. Tom Huddleberg
Architect
Tom plays an active role at Aitken Turnbull as an Architect, bringing practical knowledge, creative thinking, and a focus on delivering well-crafted spaces. Since joining the practice in 2024, he has been involved in a range of commercial projects, helping to shape thoughtful, high-quality environments. With over seven years of previous experience in construction, interior design, and architecture, Tom has worked on projects both in the UK and internationally.
